Overview

Explore some of the influences on J. R. R. Tolkien with this walk in the beautiful Ribble Valley. Tolkein spent time at the private Stoneyhurst College that dominates the sleepy village of Hurst Green, and it is hard not to see how Middle-earth was shaped by this.

You can follow in the footsteps of Tolkien as you explore the Tolkien trail. This begins at the Shireburn Arms and takes in a 5.5 mile circular walk.

This walk goes through farmland so keep an eye out for livestock in the fields; it's best to keep your dog on the lead if they like to chase.

Keep an eye out for Cromwell's Bridge, where Cromwell's men crossed the River Ribble on their march from Gisburn to the Battle of Preston.
