Speke Hall

Bronze Award

A National Trust grand house and estate in the heart of Merseyside

Overview

Speke Hall is basically next to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, so much so that you can use it as quasi-airplane-spotting location. Because of this, expect a lot of noise from passing planes, frequently.

Dogs are allowed in the grounds, but you have to pay the full admission price for the house as well, even though you can't go there. The walk itself is a confusing one. The map given to you at the entrance shows areas dogs can be, but these don't tally up with the signs around the site. Another interesting one is that some dog bins shown are actually over a locked gate that has no pedestrian access, except for climbing over it and then unceremoniously passing your dog over it too. To top it all off, to do a circular path, or just get a decent walk in, you actually leave the grounds and end up on public pathway, even though you've just paid full admission.

However, the grounds are lovely and there is plenty to explore, both on and off the grounds. Also, part of the public footpath is seemingly on some old section of the runway, so that is quite exciting!

Opening times vary by season so check before visiting.
